Yesterday in study hall there was a fifth grade student who wanted help with her science homework. She was working on vocabulary and the definition of Meteor was causing her problems. After minutes of trying to lead her to the definition of meteor using context clues in the Meteoroid section of her textbook, I broke down and explained the definition to her.
I explained that a Meteoroid, Meteor, and Meteorite referred to the same rock in different places. I told her that a meteoroid was a rock smaller than an asteroid floating in space, a meteor is when a rock from space enters the Earth’s atmosphere, and that a meteorite was when a rock from space landed on our planet. She quickly wrote all three definitions down, thanked me, and returned to her seat.
No more than two minutes later she was back at my desk asking for help on another question that read: “How are meteoroids, meteors, and meteorites related?”
Needless to say that she was the motivation behind this week’s webcomic. You can check out the comic here: http://www.spacebooger.com/index.php?comicID=35
