Last Week In Comics: The Dream Team

I have had similar dreams
The All New Atom #20 wraps up the majority of the story lines of the series thus far, including the villain behind all the weirdness in Ivy Town. Not only does it revel both Ryan’s wildest dreams we also get to see Ivy Town attacked by giant Godzilla rubber-suit like monsters… Seriously, what more could you want from a comic?

Pinch and Inch
Amazing Spider-Man 549’s story was not as strong as the grip that Jackpot looks to have on Spidey’s rear.

Lame!
Sticking to the really bad one liners:
Countdown #12 was not only weak in how it handled the side stories, but it also had the weakest punch ever!

Call your people and tell them to read this comic!
Nightwing #141 was the BEST COMIC LAST WEEK!

I may have enjoyed Atom #20, but Nightwing 141 was everything I expect from a Comic Book, especially from a non super-powered hero. Many have said that the problem with Nightwing is that he is Batman-Lite. Because of this misconception I feel that many people have a hard time writing the character. Many writers tried to hard to do something totally different to avoid the “Batman-Lite” stigma; anyone remember Devon Grayson?

Starting last issue Peter Tomasi has began to handle Nightwing not as Batman-Lite, but as a hero who learned from and looked up to the Batman. Instead of approaching Nightwing as another Batman, Tomasi’s Nightwing is a homage to Batman - a Batman that the average person without powers and all that angst can relate too. This issue shows Nightwing studying New York so that he can patrol efficiently and even getting new gadegets, just like Batman. Also in this issue there is something that is nothing like Batman - Dick Grayson. In this issue we see Dick flirting and it seems natural and not as forced as Bruce Wayne. More importantly we see the rest of the DCU interact with Dick in a caring manner, as a person not just as a shadowy figure that they work with.

If you are in need of reading a good comic, a comic with a hero, a hero who is not full of angst, and a hero who is straight up likable then read Nightwing 141, it is the Best Comic of Last Week!

Happy!
Batman Confidential 12 gives us the finale of yet another take on the origin of the Joker that is an enjoyable ending to fun story.

Secret Wars, Secret Power?

When looking at the second to last page from Secret Wars issue ten, I noticed something weird about Spider-Man’s arm:

The page in question.

Doom with the power of the Beyonder, but lets not focus on that: check out Spider-Man’s arm.

Read Richards or Spider-Man?

I know it is only two issues after the Web-head received his new symboite costume, but I don’t remember the symbiotie ever having Reed Richards’ powers too.

For more observations on Secret Wars check out this link of why Thor should also have a symbiote enemy like Venom.

Brand New Day Indeed!

I just finished reading The Amazing Spider-Man 546 and have to say I like this “Brand New Day.”

For as upset as I was last week when years of Spider-Man comics were “magically” erased from existence along with Peter Parker’s marriage to M.J., I have to say that I was quite impressed by the new story arc.

The first issue of Band New Day was well written like a “throwback” to the older 70 and 80s comics. The story had a self contained single issue story with some closure while creating a couple interesting subplots that hopefully will be explored in future issues.

Being impressed does not mean that I am forgiving or am happy with what happened last week, instead it means that I am quite happy with the current new story arc.

Marvel, i.e. Joe Q, just remember that there is a reason write great stories for Spider-Man:

Marvel - Spidey is your Money Maker!

One More Day Sucks… Bring on One More Year!

My New Year’s Resolution: With the craptastic forced storyline that was “One More Day.” I vow that for every Marvel title I purchase in 2008 I will also buy a DC Comic title that I do not regularly read. I hope that the “One More Day” story line will turn into “One More DC on the Pull List.”

It is a New Year and tonight I will be back from my holiday festivities (by festivities I mean Super Mario Galaxy on the Wii) with the first official post of 2008: Friday Night Fights

Friday: Bahlactus’s Friday Night Fights

Also this year I want to add more weekly content… and even possibly add a member to the SpaceBooger team. If you are interested in doing a weekly review post, or any weekly rant or rave and do not have your own site to post it on, then send me one of those electronic mail messages. Send your Ideas and a Sample to fred@spacebooger.com

FnF: Only One Question Please

Excuse me, can I ask you a quick question?

Better clean out your ears because the Surfer will only answer the question once!

I am so jealous of the Silver Surfer! Not just because he surfs though space, but because as a middle school teacher there are some days I would love to what he did in these panels.

Bahlactus answers to no one. School is in Session SUCKA!

Webcomc: Digital Download Drop-a-Load

First off let me say that I am highly disappointed in the art of this week’s comic. When I opened up my sketchbook this morning I realized how horrible inking in just Sharpie can be, but it was too late to redraw it. I promise better art next week… I know this because it is already done!

OK, now the topic of the WebComic is one that I have been following since Z-CultFM was shut down by both Marvel and DC. Z-CultFM was a site that hosted both forums and comic torrents to download.  I never really thought about how big the comic downloading community was, and how it can both hurt and help the comic industry. I have been participating in the discussion about it over at Comic Book Resources (link to the forum topic here).

Just before threatening legal action towards Z-CultFM and illegal comic down-loaders Marvel Comics released their own digital comic venture called Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited. I have played around and even contemplated purchasing a subscription to the service, but the more I thought about it the more I realized that I wanted to keep what I buy.

I didn’t mind reading comics on my computer screen and Marvel’s interface is one of the best I have used, but… I do not want to pay to read something this month only to pay again next year to reread the same issue. If I buy something I want Marvel to give me my Digital Comic for an Unlimited time.
