LWIC: Eww!

Last Week In Comics:
A fresh take on 5 day-old comics.

Detective Comics #854

Bruce Wayne is dead, or missing, and Dick Grayson has taken over the mantle of the bat and Kate Kain (Batwoman) has taken over the mantle of Detective Comics. That’s quite an accomplishment since the “DC” in DC Comics stands for it’s flagship “Detective Comics.” Many of you, and I’m referring to the non recent comic readers, may have heard of Batgirl but not of Batwoman. Well, you may have heard of her since she gathered a large amount of media attention when she was recreated in 2006 as a lesbian. Anyway, the media attention was about the most action Batwoman had seen since her creation, yes the pun was intended. The last time we saw her, a cult who worshiped crime tried to sacrifice her by stabbing her through her heart.

LWIC (Last Week In Comics) Batwoman returned healthy and ready to hunt down the cult that tried to kill her. It may seem like a simple plot, but Kate has more to her character other than being Batwoman and a lesbian. Note – I keep bringing up the point that she is a lesbian not because I think it’s important, but the just the opposite, to point out that it doesn’t matter. Kate Kain, like Bruce Wayne, the child of wealthy parents who fights crime. Also like Wayne, she has a hard time staying in a relationship which was well written in this issue, and focused on her mission. She is so focused on her mission she is more like Bruce’s Batman that I think Dick will be replacing Batman. I like the similarities between Batwoman and Batman (the Bruce Wayne Batman) and am looking forward to the adventures that Greg Rucka (my favorite novel author) creates for her.

The back-up feature in this comic was just as good as the main feature and deserves it’s own write-up especially since the original Question is one of my favorite characters ever.

Renee Montoya, who was first created for the animated Batman series in the 90’s, was recruited by Vic Sage to replace him when he lost the battle against cancer. Montoya, is also a lesbian who’s last relationship was with one Kate Kain, has had her own mini series where she hunted down, became the leader of, and then destroyed the cult of crime.

LWIC Montoya begins to fully embody the character of the Question by looking for conspiracy style crimes via the internet. The story is simple, she finds a plea for help, punches a dog, and gets trapped by bad guys leaving us readers hanging until the next issue. Chris Sims wrote “This one, though, reads like a straight-up story more in the vein of Denny O’Neil’s legendary Question series,” which I feel is a compliment since the O’Neil Cowan run is my favorite in the history of comics. I love the character behind the super-heroes, so if the Question is acting like the Question I’m going to love it… and it doesn’t hurt that I like the character of Renee Montoya either.

Superman #689

If you haven’t been reading the Superman related books or you didn’t read this post last week, Superman has left Earth and gone back home to New Krypton. New Krypton is located in the same orbit around the Sun as Earth, just on the opposite end. The Earthlings and the Kryptonian’s don’t trust each other since renegade Kryptoinians attacked and the US Military killed Supergirl’s dad. While Superman is off Earth he has left his childhood friend from the future Mon-El in charge of protecting Metropolis. Mon-El and Kal-El first met when Kal was a young Clark Kent. After spending some time on Earth Mon-El started to get sick and we find out that his alien race’s only weakness is to lead, and he must of ate some paint chips or something. Mon-El thought he was better but in the last issue discovered that he is not.

LWIC Mon-El travels the world seeing all that Earth has to offer before he is offed by the lead poisoning. Along his way he fights with many obscure DCU heroes around the world including a private detective that is working for a “billionaire albino midget.” That alone makes this comic great, so it’s a good thing that Geoff Johns has a couple interesting things set-up in this issue or the “billionaire albino midget” might have been the only highlight.

THE BEST COMIC OF LAST WEEK
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #598

Ok if that cover didn’t creep you out enough to send you puking, here is what has been happening in Peter Parker’s world:

So Norman Osborn has pretty much taken over the US, well the military and Avengers at least, since the alien invasion of the Skrulls – you will just have to take my word for it since I didn’t read that stuff either, I’m trusting the summary blurb in the front of the comic. Anyway, Norman’s son Harry, you know the reformed second Green Goblin, has been blackmailed by his father to become the posterboy of America since Captain America is dead. Harry Osborn is also Peter Parker’s best friend, so as you can imagine Peter is pissed when he finds out that Norman is blackmailing his own son and tries to rescue Harry. Spidey ends up getting shot in the head by Norman at the end of last issue while atempting to rescue his best friend, but…

…we found out LWIC that Peter survived that head shot with the help of a special mask created especially for these two issues by  Reed Richards.

With that kind of protection, wouldn’t it make sense that all super-heroes’ costumes were made of that material?
Anyways, back to LWIC. While Spidey’s mask is being carved away slowly, Harry tries to pull ahead of his father and rescue his pregnant fiancée (shown on the creepy ass cover above) who he thought was being held hostage by his father. Well, the pregnant young woman is following in the family business by being a “goblin” type villain known as Menace and she seems to like the villain lifestyle a little too much to give it up. Instead of being rescued, she tells Harry that she doesn’t need rescued and drops the “Your not the baby’s daddy” bomb on him. Realizing that Spidey, who by the way is getting tortured by Daddy Osborn, is his only friend he dons the armor created to fight alongside his father to fight his father.

If you are still here reading this and didn’t read the comic, you are probably real confused. This confusion is why this comic was THE BEST COMIC LAST WEEK; it’s too awesome for an amature like me to write about, meaning that you should go out and read it yourself… if you can get past that cover image.
