On January 17, 2007 the world (wide web) got to see the Booger and his supporting cast for the first time.
The concept for SpaceBooger the webcomic is simple: A boy, a Booger, a Butterfly on steroids, and the Missing Piece of Pac-Man are all trapped on a broken down spaceship floating in space with nothing but the internet and pop culture to entertain them.
After two years, the comic and its characters have evolved and changed, but the essence of each characters are still the same.
The Booger was designed with a 3-prong plug adapter as a head, a penguin’s body, and a shape on his chest similar to the skull on the Punisher’s costume.
In the first couple comic strips the Booger looked lifeless and emotionless. Since the first comic, the Booger has evolved. No longer does his head look exactly like a pug adapter, this was changed so that he could have emotional facial expressions. The Booger is not the only character to change; the Boy now has a face and makes fewer appearances than in the first year.
The only character not to change is the Missing Piece of Pac-Man. The Missing Piece makes me laugh every time I draw him. His constant sad look is heartwarming and hilarious, and will continue until he finally feels that he “fits in” somewhere.
Not part of the original cast and introduced in December 2007 was the Booger’s arch enemy/best friend BarryFly. BarryFly originated as a sketch that I was working on when trying to create a villain for the Booger during his attempt to become a superhero. I joked around saying that Barry-Fly was a butterfly on steroids and in comic number 30 we learn that the Booger himself accidentally created BarryFly.
Here are my five favorite strips from the comic’s second year:
Major Event – Anyone remember LL Cool J’s “Pink Cookies in a Plastic Bag Being Crushed by Buildings” song where his lyrics contained as many artist names as possible? You don’t remember the song then peep the video below. Anyway, the “Major Event” comic was my nod to that concept. With Secret Invasion and Final Crisis being hyped, I decided to use as many major crossover events as possible in the Booger’s rant of hatred towards BarryFly.
Book vs Box – Many of the comic strips are results of comments or conversations of my students, and this one was no different with the Booger calling BaryFly “stupid” because he reads instead of playing video games.
The Carver – Usually I am not a big fan of holiday themed humor, but the visuals in this past years Halloween comic makes me chuckle.
Herbivore – Again my students were used as motivation for one of the best comics. When teaching about Herbivores a student honestly thought I was referring to marijuana. The whole class erupted in laughter when the student asked about herbivores eating marajuana, so I knew it was funny before I even made the comic.
“Comb” was the first comic in the 12 part series that I deemed the “Racketboy Saga.” The “Racketboy Saga” began after my wife called one of my favorite forums (Racketboy.com/forums) as a “cult” of retro video gamers. The reason I love this comic so much is the random and visual humor, it just makes me laugh every time I see the Booger wearing the wig for no apparent reason. The “cult” aspect went on for 12 weeks ending with a cameo from Captain N The Gamemaster, but the introduction strip is my favorite ever.
I only review/feature comics on this site that I own.
