For 12 Rounds We Brought The Ruckus!

Crisis On Earth Prime, catch the blast of a hype verse
My glock bursts, leave in a hearse, he did worse
Hero Sandwich comes rough, tough like an elephant tusk
Ya head rush, fly like Egyptian musk
Aw, Yet Another Comics Blog spark the wicks an’
However, Roscoe masters the trick just like Nixon
Causin terror, quick damage ya whole era
Hardrocks is locked up, or found shot
It’s Clobberin’ Time is hazardous, cause wrecks this dangerous
and blows sparks like Waco, Texas

Phoning It In watches my back like I’m locked down, hardcore
Hittin sound, watch Osukaru act bugged, and tear it down
A literate type dude, songs goin gold, no doubt
and you watch a corny man fold
Yeah, they fake and all that
Carryin gats but yo, Slay Monstrobot of the Deep is
Rollin like forty Macs
Now ya act convinced, I guess it makes sense
Johnny Bacardi, represent
The Comic Treadmill waits for one to act up
Now The Geek has got him backed up
Gun to his neck now, react what?
And that’s one in the chamber
Friday Night Fight fighter, 12 rounds of danger

Pulp Hero rips it hardcore, like porno-flick chicks
Check it, Dem’s Good Readin’s method on the microphone’s bangin
The Sock Drawer’s slang’ll leave your headpiece hangin
Bust this, Nerdosity is kickin like Segall, Out for Justice
The roughness, yes, the rudeness, ruckus
Redrum, Akira The Don verbally assaults with the tongue
Murder one, Random Encounter’s style shot ya knot like a stun-gun
The Fantasy Theater is hectic, he wrecks it with the quickness

Yo, The ISB is more rugged than slaveman boots
New recruits, 999 is messin’ up MC troops
The Cry Havok break loops, and trample stuff, while he stomp!
Travelling En Los Surcos creeps up on site, now it’s Fright Night
Stars And Garters’ slang is mad freakn’ dangerous
And more deadly than the stroke of an axe
Choppin through ya back *swish*
Givin bystanders heart-attacks
Suckas try to flip, tell me who is him
BW Media blows up his prism
Make it a vicious act of terrorism
You wanna bring it,
Come on and bring the ruckus
And Panels of Awesome provokes suckaz to kick buckets
Bring da fuckin ruckus…

WebComic: Lost Thought Process

This week I mixed my lack of ideas when writing the comic with a comment by a real comic book writer on twitter.

So, I give thanks to @warrenellis for the motivation and his bag of ideas for this weeks webcomic.

LWIC: Search No Longer. A Hero Is Found

Last Week In Comics:
A fresh take on 5-day-old comics.

Amazing Spider-Man #584

With the whole presidential hype over, the comic refocuses on the election that has played a large part in the previous issues – the NYC mayoral election.

Speaking of the election, the issue begins with the Shocker and Boomerang talking about everyone’s civil duty to vote. The Shocker says that since he is a super-villain he can’t vote and Boomerang replies that is what a secret identity is for. Ok, so when Spidey, the Fantastic Four, and the Avengers capture a criminal and send them to jail, or worse the Vault, the criminals get to wear their costumes and keep their secret identities… not from what I read… oh well at least the art was on point.

JRJR’s return to art duties comes with a great story if you ignore the villain vote spiel. With the mayoral race almost over, both candidates want to be credited with bringing Spider-Man into police custody, especially since they believe that he is now a serial killer. By the end of the issue we see a clue pointing toward Peter Parker’s roommate Vin Gonzales; Officer Gonzales to be exact, as being the Spider-Tracer serial killer.

At first I didn’t think that in the first issue of the arc the true killer would be relieved, but after thinking about it for a while, maybe the writers aren’t playing with our brains. Back in Kraven’s First Hunt, Vin was captured by Kraven’s daughter, who believed that he was Spider-Man. Since then Vin has not said too much about that instance that almost cost him his life… so maybe he does have some inner hate or angst against the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

Faces of Evil – Deathstroke

Hey look I finally bought a Faces of Evil one-shot. A guy at my local comic shop saw that I was getting Vigilante 2 and he joked, saying that I need to get this comic too because they both feature the same character. I knew he was being sarcastic, but I loved Deathstroke’s solo series and I enjoyed Vigilante 1 so I figured I would pick it up just to spite him.

I guess the story in this issue is nothing spectacular, but it does give insight to Deathstroke’s healing ablity and tells the readers what role he will play in the future of the DCU. It seems as if Deathstroke does not just have a fast healing ability, but instead he can control every molecule in his body, thus able to regrow or repair his heart after being sliced in half by GeoForce. Since Slade can control every molecule in his body, couldn’t he just readjust the placement of his molecules to shape shift? Yeah, I kinda liked the “super” healing factor better than this new power.

I do like how he is no longer going to be the DCU’s super assassin for hire so that any writer can easily pencil him into any book at any time. Unfortunately, the dude at the shop was right, since he chooses who to kill and why he is the exact same character as Vigilante.

Supergirl #37

Before the New Krypton story arc began, I dropped this book from my monthly rotation only to pick it up for that story arc with plans on dropping it after the story ended. With the quality of every Superman related book being consistent throughout the story, I decided to give Supergirl another chance. I am glad that I did.

The story featured in this issue is a “spin-off” or branch from the New Krypton arc, I don’t know if that is the reason I like this or because Gates and Igle are writing a competent and likable Kara Zor-EL. Speaking of writing, I originally thought that Kara left Earth to live on  New Krypton to keep track of the Kryptonians, especially her mother, sort of like a spy for Superman… but it looks as if she may support her mother and that I was wrong about my hunch.

This comic gets the “good science” of 2009 award for Kara’s discussion about crying in space. 2009 is still young, but this scene features good science that is often forgot and not found in other comics:

Vigilante #2

Hmm… didn’t I already talk about the Vigilante, oh that was a Deathstroke review, wasn’t it?

The Vigilante is the Punisher, DC style. If you look all over the internet you will see people arguing who would win battles that pit Marvel characters and DC Comic characters, and there is only one way to determine who would win – CAPCOM made a MARVEL VS DC 2D fighting game. Anyway, arguing who would win in a battle between DC and Marvel characters is almost pointless since both universes are drastically different. Yeah both universes feature Earth, share cities and countries, and have a plethora of costumed meta/super humans running all over, but the attitudes and environments are different. DC is more of a fantasy universe, where when done right, the readers accept and understand multiple universes, and the Marvel universe is more down-to-Earth and gritty, teetering as close to realistic as possible in comics. So comparing the Vigilante to the Punisher is limited.

The Vigilante and the Punisher both work outside of the law deciding who to take down and how to take them down, and that is where the similarities end. The Punisher takes down mob bosses in settings we, the readers, truly believe could be real. The Vigilante takes down meta humans in jail. The Punisher is a badass who showcases his skills by violently taking down other badasses, while the Vigilante is a badass who takes on superhumans. See fundamentally the same yet totally different. I myself like both characters. I like the realism of the Punisher and love the fantasy and unrealistic nature of the DCU. So the Vigilante, to me, is a great book.

THE BEST COMIC OF LAST WEEK
ROBIN #182

I have praised the Search For a Hero run since it began. Within the last two years I feel that Tim Drake has grown from being Batman’s sidekick into a younger version of Batman.  The last time Freddie Williams III was digitally drawing and inking this comic (issue number 160 to be exact) I stated that Tim was more of a Dark Knight than Batman – the exact quote was “Dark Knight is now a shade of red.” Since issue 160, Robin has been doing detective work, scare tactic interrogations, and thinking through villains as good as, if not beter, than Batman and the ending to “Search for a Hero” is no different.

Robin, who is almost alone in protecting Gotham city due to Batman’s absence, has been challenged by his mentor who instructed Spoiler to test Tim and make him “a better Robin.” To complete the task Spoiler enlisted Ulysses Hadrian Armstrong (the General) to create havok for Robin. Ulysses, known for his military tactic genious, shoots himself up with the “meta steroids,” dons Anarky’s costume, and creates chaos in Gotham city.

Robin, taking a nod from Jason Todd, decides to control the situation in a way that Batman never would – he planned on controlling the chaos between the gang war, allowing it to continue and cancel out other chaos. This is a ballsy move, and not the only one in this issue.

In the end, Tim becomes a Darker Knight than even Frank Miller portrayed in “The Dark Knight Returns” with Tim allowing innocents to die to put an end to the chaos and blackmailing crooked cops to become his permanent informants to both the police and  underworld of Gotham. Watching, or reading, as Robin had to determine who to save from the explosion and what risks and reasons were involved, showed a maturity to the character; maturity as a hero who has to make tough choices.

As the events of this issue unfold, it is nice to see that Gotham is ready to embrace it’s new protector in the post-Batman era. I have to admit that the giant bat-spotlight in the sky replaced with a “R” for Robin was a fitting ending and new beginning for Gotham and Robin.
