LWIC: Superman and Batman - BFF4EVER!

Last Week In Comics: giving a fresh take on 5-day-old comics.

Blue Beetle #29

Dialog and characterization make this title a fun read even when nothing real important happens. Here is the memorable moments from this issue:

Here is the main story from this issue:

Notice the memorable moments and the plot are completely different, but the characterization and the dialog tie the two together nicely.

Ka-Pow! is one of my favorites too.

Catwoman #81

It was rumored a while ago that Selina Kyle would return to a more “villain” acting Catwoman after finding out that her mind was “reprogrammed” to be a hero. When this rumor first appeared I was worried that it would be another “One More Day,” but I was wrong.

After reading this issue I realized that I never really considered Catwoman a villain, she was like Batman with not as strict moral code and a trust fund to pay for all her neat stuff.

In this issue I finally realized gave into the fact that Selina would no longer be hero, in the sense of truth, justice, and the American way, but instead a woman who loves the trill and adrenaline rush associated with her alter-ego.

Green Lantern #33

This new “Secret Origin” of Hal Jordan becoming the Green Lantern reminds me of the TV show Smallvile. Now I have not watched that show since the third season, but from what I remember it tied a young Clark Kent to almost all of his future self’s rogues gallery.

In the past couple of issues we see the origin of Sinestero and Hecotor Hammond closely tied to the Green Lantern’s origin, and in this issue we see that the origin of Black Hand also ties in as well.

Speaking of this origin of the Black Hand, I remember him as a guy who could make increasing inventions and battled many of the heroes in the DCU, but I do not remember him having a fetish for messing with the dead people in his father’s mortuary… creepy.

Reign In Hell #1

Ok I don’t get it… I am lost.

I never once pictured hell as an underground metropolis complete with street vendors.

Isnt Hell underground? Then why are they using Earths surface as the basis of its map?Isn’t Hell underground? Then why are they using Earth’s surface as the basis of it’s map?

Superman Batman #50

I now wish I would have planned this post better, because the Smallville comparison would have worked better here since this comic has to do with Superman and all.

I am not quite happy with the coincidence that Jor-El sent his only son to Earth after having a conversation with Thomas Wayne in holographic form on Krypton.

Nor, am I happy that Thomas Wayne’s fortune came from the reverse engineering of Krypton technology.

The last couple of pages put proper emphasis on how opposite the Dark Knight and Big Blue are, and that dynamic is why I think a book like this works. Tying these two’s origin’s together is unnecessary and wasn’t even that fun of a read.

Teen Titans #61

Grumpy and Goofy team up in this buddy story similar to any of the Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder team up movies. Yes, there is comedy. Yes, a meaningful story is attempted. No, the story was not that good. Yes, the character moments were funny.

I am about ready to drop this book, because the Blue Beetle is the only thing that keeps me coming back each month. Speaking of coming back each month… can we drop the future titans story already. I want to see these characters grow not put into a predetermined already created mold.

Trinity #9

I want to know how many utility belts Batman has? In this issue he just happens to have one hidden in a fake tree in the back yard of Wayne Manor… where he also just happens to be being attacked by prehistoric shaymen. I must also mention that the utility belt played no role in the defeat of the prehistoric shaymen - only Batman’s fist, foot, and Superman were necessary.

This week we also get introduced to two new villains, one who seems fairly cookie-cutter and the other one steals the Joker’s laugh. In recent issues many tarot related items have been stolen from museums all over the world, but here we see these two new villains, Swashbuckler and Trans-Volitional Man (I have no idea what the hell that means by the way) steal personal items from people close to the Trinity mainly Batman: Jim Gordon’s pipe, Nightwing’s mask, and the Joker’s Laugh.

and…

THE BEST COMIC OF LAST WEEK:
Joker’s Asylum: Two-Face #1

I have liked all of these Joker’s Asylum books and I didn’t think that any could be better the the one featuring the Penguin, but I was wrong.

In this issue we see a man who is the same, yet the opposite of of Two-Face. The right side of his face is scared from a sever burn similar to the left of Two-Face. Also this man is a hero, a fireman, and has used his accident as a cause for good… until he tries to help Two-Face.

I would give you more about this story, but my finger is now bleeding through my band-aid and this story can not be described in a way that sparks the emotion of reading this issue. Check out the image below to see why Joker’s Asylum: Two-Face is THE BEST COMIC OF LAST WEEK!
