Did You Forget How Amazing 52 Was?

52

Did you forget this month last year DC Comic’s Awesome series 52 came to an end?

On May 2, 2007 One Year Later was no longer later and Booster Gold became the hero that saved the universe.

I often get frustrated at comics that are considered “blockbusters” or “big events” because they are written with a”for the trade” attitude. DC Comic’s big event that directly followed Infinite Crisis did not fit the standard previously set for a “big event” or “blockbuster.”

52 managed to tell a year long story in 52 issues (or 52 chapters) that never left that bad “written for the trade” taste in your mouth. Maybe it was because the wait between issues was only six days, or maybe the series read smoothly because the action was story and character orientated. Other big events focus on action and shock first and then story and characters second.

Speaking of characters 52 was unique because it did not feature any of DC’s “big three.” Infact the tagline for the series was “A year without Superman; a year without Batman; a year without Wonder Woman…but not a year without heroes.”

The desciption of 52 according Amazon.com:

Earth’s greatest protectors-Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman-have vanished. The cities of Metropolis and Gotham are overrun with criminal activity both on the streets and behind the closed doors of powerful corporations as villains take advantage of the absence of superheroes.
In their place stand the veteran and rookie heroes they inspired. From popular media personality Booster Gold and the enigmatic Question to the mysterious vigilante Batwoman and the secretive Supernova, these heroes are the only ones who can turn the tide against a vast conspiracy of evil determined to take control of the planet.
This is the story of one year without the world’s greatest superheroes. Twelve months. 365 days. 52 weeks.

Did you forget the awesomeness that was DC Comic’s 52?

Our 13 on 52 series has been a labor of love, and it’s hard to believe that it’s almost over! Countdown, as I understand it, was quite different from 52, but it’ll be interesting to see how 52 (a year without the Big Three) and Trinity (a year devoted to the Big Three) compare.
