WebComic: Airlock

Right now in my classroom I am teaching about space, and I could not ask for better ideas for comics than the ones my students have given me.

Last week’s comic dealt with the fact that sound does not travel in space, an idea from a student. This week’s comic deals with another misconception that started out as a discussion with one of my classes.

At the same time I was talking about bad science and common misconceptions of space in the movies a student asked about the explosion of the death star. We were talking about how fires can not burn without oxygen. As the discussion continued we talked about airlocks and the pressurization needed in space… mix these two discussions together with a teenager’s imagination and you have one student asking me: “So, if I was were to start a fire in an airlock and opened the door. Then the fire would follow the oxygen out into space and burn for a split second, right?” After hearing this another student asked him “Why would you have a fire in an airlock? What are you doing - Barbecuing?” Both the class and I found this funny.

It may have been a “you had to be there” moment, but I found it funny enough to use it for the webcomic.
