LWICK: A Final Crisis to Live Up to the Hype

6/30/08

Last Week In Comics, giving a fresh take on 5-day-old comics.

Green Lantern #32

Green Lantern #32

I still don’t know how I feel with a new or updated origin for Hal Jordan. I have a sweet spot for Hal’s second origin - Emerald Dawn was my first trade paperback in the DCU other than “Batman: A Death In the Family.”

I am enjoying this new origin… but it all is seeming to tie too easily into the new Green Lantern mythos born from Hal’s resurrection in Rebirth. I never had a grasp on Hector Hammond before and I like the setup to make him a major player again in the Green Lantern comics, since this seems to be an origin story for him as well.

As long as I can distance myself from the fond memories of Hal Jordan the drunk driver, I will continue to enjoy this newest origin of Hal Jordan.

Superman #677

Superman #677

I love almost all of Jack Kirby’s work. I admire his art and it’s awesome ability to tell a story. I even like most of Jack Kirby’s stories. Jack Kirby’s costume design… well sometimes I wonder…

I was all about to make fun of Atlas, yeah the guy who in mythological stories held up the planet, and even question his toughness seeing how he is wearing only a skirt and a scarf on his head. After surfing the net, I learned that this version of Atlas was a Jack Kirby design and character. Upon learning that I moved on and put the costume design into the Darksied category of a badass in a miniskirt.

Once able to read the story without laughing at Atlas, I came to the conclusion that the parts involving Atlas still sucked.

If you have this issue and were waiting five days from it’s purchase for my review before reading it here is my advice: Just read the part where Superman, Hal Jordan, and Krypto are playing fetch in outer space. Yes and Krypto has dialog that is deeper and more fun to read than that of the Science Police and Atlas who also appear in this issue.

Teen Tiatans #60

Teen Titans #60

I hope now that this issue is over there will be no more _____ Titans (fill in the blank with an evil sounding word) now that the Teen Titans defeated the Clock King’s Terror Titans.

What you mean there is a Terror Titans #1 solicited… damn!

Here is my take on this issue: “If the Blue Beetle was not in this issue I would not have purchased it and this title would be dropped a.s.a.p.”

There are only three characters on the current roster of the Teen Titans that I enjoy reading about: Blue Beetle, Ravager, and Robin. Now that Ravager is gone I am expecting Wendy and Marvin to pick up the slack in this series or I may not continue to read it.

Trinity #4

Trinity #4

I am still trying to figure out where this is going… for the last three issues the Trinity (Supes, Bats, and Wonder Woman) and the Justice League have been fighting a losing battle against a Doomsday-like creature. Here is a recap of the last three issues: 1. Creature takes out JLA. 2. Creature KO’s Superman. 3. Creature gets stronger (armor) and continues to kick butt.

When this series started I liked that aspect of a cosmic duo studying the Trinity, but that has slowed down. I know that this is a 52 week story, but the pace needs to pick up soon because as of now I am more interested in the secondary story.

I was never a fan of Gangbuster in the early 90s. Maybe it was the fact that Metropolis had so many other Superheroes that I wasn’t a fan of a man in riot gear single-handedly crusading against all gang activity. In this comic seeing the Gangbuster as a concerned citizen in a town without super-villains seems works better and right now that is the most enjoyable part of this comic.

THE BEST COMIC OF LAST WEEK:
FINAL CRISIS #2

Final Crisis #2

I read Final Crisis #2 as soon as I sat down with it in my possession and my first reaction (that I posted on Twitter) was “Final Crisis #2 - WTF? I have to read through it again, but right now my head hurts.

So I read it again, slower. I payed attention to the pretty pictures a little more before going to CBR’s Final Crisis Forums.

Discussing and dissecting a comic with peers can easily enhance “good book” to the “great book” status it deserves. This is where I am jealous of those who work in comic shops, because I have to rely on forums for my discussion since my comics come from a stand in a local indoor flea market.

The reason this comic is easily THE BEST COMIC OF LAST WEEK is not because of the story alone it’s because of the story telling found in this comic. The clues, or details, leading the readers to believe that Dan Turpin is the new host of Darksied, the imprint of Jon Stewart’s ring on Kraken’s hand, the exiled Monitor’s sketches, a time traveling bullet with what seems to be the Morticoccus virus inside of it, and the mysterious Libra are making Final Crisis one hell of a ride.

Oh, and any series that is prompting me to purchase Jack Kirby’s Fourth World Omnibus and Morrision’s Seven Soldiers of Victory so that I better understand it must make DC Comics one happy publisher.

Bat-Family Brand Shoes

Last Week In Comics, giving a fresh take on 5-day-old comics.

Amazing Spider-Man #563

Amazing Spider-Man #563

Last issue our friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man was impersonated so that a super villain “bookie” could fix a bet.

Having a bookie being the main villain for the last couple issues was no Mayan Snow Ninjas, but the way in which Dan Slot is tying all of the different storylines together will definitely keep me around even after these kind of mediocre issues.

Based on the way I interpreted the foreshadowing in this issue - I look forward to the return of Mister Negative, from the first arc of Brand New Day.

Batman and the Outsiders #8

Batman and the Outsiders #8

The last issue was disappointing and this issue was an improvement. The comic is still not what I expect it to be. A couple months ago I predicted that it would take Chuck Dixion a couple of issues to turn another author’s story into his own… unfortunately Chuck no longer works for DC Comics.

Ok, I have avoided the talk about the divorce between Chuck and DC but this week’s “Lying in the Gutters” discussion about DC comics has me fearing for my favorite character’s futures.

As for this issue, it was nice to see Batgirl being the character that was defined in her solo title: a bad ass fighting machine that can take out an entire army. I look forward to the “we die fighting” attitude of this issue to play out in future storylines with or with out Chuck Dixion.

Birds of Prey #119

Birds of Prey #119

Barbra Gordon is Oracle who is the all knowing Superman-like figure of the virtual world in the DCU. It would only make sense that she lived in the “Silicone Valley” of the DCU: Platinum Flats.

It seems as if the DUC not only has town named similar to our own high-tech business area, it also has corresponding internet companies: YouSpace, Findster, and eBuy.

The main plot instead focused on how all of the companies of Platinum Flats are manipulated by one man.

This issue’s cover promised a fight between Manhunter and Black Canary, but that looks as if it was a false alarm and we will have to wait until next issue.

The manipulation of the financial backbone of the internet is a perfect enemy for Oracle once this series moves past the upcoming battle between Manhunter and Black Canary.

Justice League of America #22

Justice League of America #22

I was not a fan of this Justice League of America’s first storyline, and continuing the whole Red Tornado story isn’t changing my mind.

In this issue we find out that not only does the Red Tornado’s wife love him, she also makes love to him. Now that’s something I did not want to know.

On the flip side there was a great character moment not between the focus characters of the story who were: Red Arrow, Hawkgirl, or Vixen. Instead the best part was only one panel featuring Superman and Green Lantern.

Hal was telling a story and Superman gives him a “Right, Right.” The only time I say “Right, Right.” is when I want the speaker to think that I am paying attention to his or her story when really I could care less.

Watching Hal get a “Right, Right.” from Superman almost make this comic the best of last week.

Superman Batman #49

Superman Batman #49

Superman’s quest to rid the world of Kryponite finally ended.

Whew… I liked the story but man I totally forget what happened when this story started… it took too many issues. At least the art was pretty.

I was surprised to see how running Lexcorp would make one of Superman’s closest friends turn on him. For years many of us have just accepted that Lex Luthor is evil while forgetting that he does not view himself that way.

The character of Lex Luthor has never seen himself as evil, he has always believed that he is doing what is best for the people of Metropolis. In this issue we see Lana Lang act in a similar fashion to keep the employees of Lexcorp from becoming unemployed.

Trinity #3

Trinity #3

So a giant rampaging alien takes out a Green Lantern.

Then the giant rampaging alien takes out the rest of the Justice League.

Finally the giant rampaging alien KO’s Superman…

Hmm, I think I liked this better the first time when it was called “The Death of Superman.”

Ok, there was no way I could resist that statement, but this issue was not that bad. I am not a big Bagley fan so even with a week storyline his art seemed even weaker and for once the backup story was better than the main one.

I am a fan of characterization and the backup story had plenty whereas the main story was a traditional comic book slugfest. I just have to keep reminding myself that this is only a small part in a 52 chapter story.

THE BEST COMIC OF LAST WEEK:
CATWOMAN #80

Best

There is not much to say as to why this comic was the BEST COMIC OF LAST WEEK, other than it shows why you should never fuck with Catwoman!

Take that!

R.I.P. George Carlin

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080623/us_nm/carlin_dc

I have read both of his books and listened to his comedy albums many times…
One of the best comics in my opinion…

It is a sad day for comedy…

All of those crappy wanabe comedians, like Larry the Cable Guy, need to keep their mouths shut and give a day of silence out of respect for someone they will never be as funny as!

George’s Seven Words Skit (these skits contain mature language and is not safe for work)

Instead of posting I have been playing Space Invaders Extreme on the Nintendo DS

I am a huge fan of the original and have played many of crappy Space Invader remakes… but this one is well worth the $20.

WebComic: LEGO DUDE

This weeks comic is in regards to a recent comment at another site regarding the design of the Booger in the comic two weeks ago.

This was the comment:

Thirsty: “You put some 80’s themed dresses on a penis with a face?”

Me: “Does your penis have two bumps on the end of it? Eww!”

Thirsty: “Seriously, what is that thing? Besides the bumps, it’s extremely phallic.”

Chris: “It’s a Lego guy.”

So here is the response: http://www.spacebooger.com/index.php?comicID=57

Last Week In Comics 6/16/08

Last Week In Comics, giving a fresh take on 5-day-old comics.

With me being at the beach on vacation last week, I read all of the following comics in one sitting and because of that the commentary may be shorter than usual.

Amazing Spider-Man #562

Amazing Spider-Man #562

Sometimes the humor in the Amazing Spider-Man seems forced, but most of the time it makes me chuckle.

The cover making fun of the Clone Saga set a great tone for this story. Speaking of story this issue brought together some of the “loose ends” from recent issues, including the one involving Speedball. You remember Speedball right? She was the random character that embarrassed Spidey on the internet via streaming video a couple of issues ago. Bob Gale put the pieces together nicely.

Again, as much as you may have hated the “One More Day” arc… let it go and check out Spidey again - it’s fun!

Batman Confidential #18

Batman Confidential #18

The first image, featuring a full page spread of a nude Batgirl with her “naughty bits” barely covered up by the cape she is holding, reminded me of some porn created by a fan who Joneses for seductive pin-ups of cartoon characters.

After reading this comic in the privacy of my own home for fear of what the public would think of me when looking over my shoulder at a nude Batgirl fighting a nude Catwoman, I must admit it was a fun issue. I look forward to the reveal of the fully clothed twist presented at the end of this issue.

Booster Gold #10

Booster Gold #10

Ah, Mister Mind how I love the idea of a little worm with a transistor radio who is attempts to take over the world…

In this one issue many questions/hints/spoilers are introduced to the reader. There was another chalk board full of questions or possible foreshadows that I’m sure put the all of the members of comic book forums speculating for days.

I think we all can see where the end of this story arc is going, it was made clear when Booster tried to save Barbra Gordon from being shot by the Joker that time can not be changed. So in the end we all know that Ted Kord must die, but the glimpses of the future and the interaction of characters makes Booster Gold a must read every month.

Gotham Underground #9

Gotham Underground #9

Man this is a pretty book, not as pretty as the issue where every panel was a puzzle piece but pretty none the less.

For as good as the pencils and inks were, the story was not so strong. What started out as a “fan boy’s” dream became a gang war that was ended in about three pages.

The ride was much more entertaining than the destination - seeing Nightwing undercover, Batman undercover and in jail, Robin taking up the slack with Batman gone, the return of the Spoiler and Vigilante, and a huge Bat-Rouge vs. Intergang war all ended with a one page summary.

There was so much potential to the story and it ended without really ending… I hate to spoil the series but Intergang still rules the streets of Gotham and the Penguin is now Batman’s number one snitch.

At least we will see the same art team of J.Calafiore and Jack Purcell on the covers of some upcoming Batman and the Outsiders along with a couple issues of the newest Batgirl series.

Green Arrow Black Canary #9

Green Arrow Black Canary #9

This issue can be summed up in one sentence: Connor is still in a Coma and Black Canary provides more comic relive than the supposed funny guest star - Plastic Man.

The dialog and character interaction is well done, especially between Speedy and her London crush, but the story is dragging on so long that I almost forgot that the heroes were still looking for those responsible for Connor’s coma.

Green Lantern Corps #25

Green Lantern Corps #25

When I first flipped through this issue I had no motivation to read it, but once I finished it I was impressed.

I liked the last issue because we got to see the origin of Mongul’s weapon of choice - the Black Mercy flower. In this issue we see that there is a momma who is protective of her babies.

The Black Mercy flower’s origin is continued in this issue telling how the flower’s intent was originally pure because the flowers could produce pleasureful thoughts for those in pain. With this new found power the Mother flower wanted to set up an intergalactic Hospice by having babies that could be transported all over the universe. To make a long story short the babies needed food and Mongul needed a weapon so they teamed up.

Green Lantern Corps #25 did not feature much movement in regards to the overall story, but it was an interesting and educational read.Salvation Run #7

Salvation Run #7

For six issues these villians have been trapped on a violent and dangerous planet with no way to get back to Earth. Yet in the span of half an issue Luthor reviles a machine that can take them home.

Recently I accused the last issue of Batman and the Outsiders as being similar to a story that one of my middle school students would write where after many pages of turmoil they get bored of writing and end the story as quick as possible. I just want it on the record that Salvation Run’s ending was even more rushed than one of my student’s stories.

I liked the evilness portrayed at the end where Luthor uses some of the rouges as human batteries for the portal back to Earth.

Trinity #2

Trinity #2

Last week I praised the first issue stating that the slow movement was caused by it being an introductionary issue. Maybe a 52 issue series can afford to spend a couple issues on setting up the story, but for the reader this makes a somewhat boring stand alone issue.

Don’t get me wrong I watching Superman remove a growing solar system from Metropolis was awesome, especially since it featured many vocabulary words I use in my seventh grade science class. Even better was Batman beating his imaginary foes with one word whereas his super friends used brute force shows that Busiek knows and can write these three characters well, but I still can’t tell where this is going.

The backup story in the last issue was just as good if not better the the first part, but this week’s one felt like filler. The one thing I do like is that both stories in each issue so far have tied directly together. I am not giving negative commentary on this issue I did enjoy it, it just wasn’t as catchy as the first issue.

and…

THE BEST COMIC OF LAST WEEK:
ACTION COMICS #866

Action Comics 866

I will give one negative complaint before praising this issue: I am currently reading Kevin J Anderson’s novel “The Last Days Of Krypton” and the description of Braniac’s stealing of Kandor was quite different than the one portrayed in this this comic book.

Now on to the good:
There are only three things that happen in this whole issue:

  1. Kandor is captured by Braniac and placed into a bottle.
  2. Cat Grant and Steve Lombard are back working for the Daily Planet.
  3. A Braniac like robot attacks Superman in the present day to confirm that he is Kryptonaian.

What makes Action Comics #866 the BEST COMIC OF LAST WEEK is the detail put into the story, remember only three things happen within the whole issue, and Geoff Johns’ spot on characterizations of each character.

ha!

HA HA!

The above is proof that the characterizations alone make Action Comics #866 THE BEST COMIC OF LAST WEEK.
