Rumor has it that summer 2008 the Batman will die, and one of the Robins will take up the mantle of the Bat.
Will Dick Grayson become Batman, or is this the beginning of Tim Drake’s transformation shown in the “Titans Tomorrow” storyline?
When Infinite Crisis was over, DC released the first teaser image for “Countdown to Final Crisis” with Red Robin standing with other heroes on a destroyed Statue of Liberty.

Dan Didio stated, retracted, and then restated that Jason Todd would become the “Red Robin” shown in this image.
More on Jason Todd in a minute, but lets look at the possible death of Batman.
When the second teaser image was released the image was similar to the first image with the exception of villains instead of heroes standing around a statue of Darseid.

The second teaser image shows many scenes that have already happened:
Overlooked by many, possibly seen as cliché, is tattered uniforms of DC’s big three indicating possible death.
A couple weeks ago in his column “Lying in the Gutters”, Rich Johnston posted the rumor that Bruce Wayne a.k.a. the Batman would be passing and then replaced by one of his sidekicks next summer.
A week later he continued the rumor stating that Bruce Wayne would become one of the New Gods after his death.
This week Johnston informed the readers of his column that Bruce’s replacement as Batman would be the former sidekick who came back from the dead: Jason Todd.
After reading the “green lighted” rumor, I have a couple questions:
- If Jason Todd becomes the Batman, then who is under the cowl of the Red Robin?
- Will Jason be Red Robin then become the Batman?
- Why not Dick? Is it like in Knightfall where Bruce believes that he too much “his own man” as Nightwing to become the Batman?
- Why not Tim Drake? Is Tim too young, or is he too afraid of becoming his future self shown in the “Titans Tomorrow” story?
- Most importantly: After the Final Crisis will there be a DCU reboot with Bruce Wayne as Batman, or will Bruce stay one of the new “New Gods?”
I know that this site is not know for discussions, but it does get many hits each day… so leave your thoughts or comments discussing the rumor of Jason Todd becoming Batman next summer.
