I like the idea for this week’s webcomic, especially how we now have some continuity between comics.
I admit it, this comic was a little rushed.
I planned on spending more time on it, but I had to fight a battle of my own.
On Monday I had a group graduate paper due. I did my part the others did theirs and they were merged into one. On Monday afternoon the paper was submitted to the university’s writing center to check for plagiarism. Submitting the paper to check for plagiarism is something I always do when working with other people on-line, especially those whom you never met in person. Usually they come back with small easily fixable problems, this time 34% of the paper was marked as plagiarized.
None of the parts tagged as plagiarized were my parts, most of the copied text was not even cited. So I posted in the classroom that my group needed to fix their mistakes and cite their sources. After not seeing any reply from my group, I tried to find the research they used and cite the material myself. It was impossible, but I am a good soldier and willing to sacrifice my time for an “A”. Later Monday evening, a message was sent to me stating the errors were fixed and our paper was being submitted to the professor.
Today I sit down to scan in the art for the webcomic and I check my email. The in-box contains a message from my professor. This message said that my group received no credit for the project and she would have us expelled if we turned in another plagiarized paper.
I was livid!
I assumed all was fixed before it was turned in. So needless to say I wrote a couple nasty emails. One email went out to all my group members, and it was not pleasant. Another email went to my professor explaining that I did not appreciate expulsion being threatened for material I was not responsible for - my parts were not plagiarized. I still have my part of the paper which is properly cited both in my copy and the paper that was turned in.
All of this only reinforces my opinion on Cyber Schooling.
After final settling down, I wrote the script for today’s webcomic and put it all together… it may not be the best comic to date, but all things considered…
I did notice that last week’s comic being in color, was nice… I may have to rethink the art style and backgrounds….
