“SHAZAM! I just wanted to see if it was contagious.”

break yo self fool

Over at Newsarama there is an article about DC’s newest comic from thier new “kid friendly” line of comics: Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam.

SHAZAM!

Growing up I remember Captain Marvel from the cartoon on TV, except I thought his name was Shazam.

I never realized that Shazam was the name of the wizard, but it didn’t matter. The only thing that mattered was that a young boy about my age could turn into a Superman type hero, who cared what his exact name was.

I have read many comics that either starred or featured Captain Marvel since then, but in most of the comics he never seemed that interesting.
There are 2 exceptions:
1.  Captain Marvel’s appearance in Justice League Unlimited where he was still young Billy Batson living in the mightiest mortals body.
2.  Jeff Smith’s Shazam and the Monster Society of Evil made Mary Marvel one of the most lovable characters ever.

I do not know much about Mike Kunkel but the following quotes from the Newsarama article has me sold that he can bring the magic back to the Marvel family:

“I want this story to truly be told from both sides of the coin … 11 year-old Billy Batson and adult Captain Marvel. The very best hero stories are when you really care and know about the character before they put on their “super-suit.” To me, Captain Marvel is every kid’s wish come true.”
“When Billy transforms into his alter ego of Captain Marvel, his mental and physical abilities are super enhanced by the six iconic legends that make up the magical word “Shazam,” but he’s still the same person. It’s how I’ve always seen it. Just seems simpler and makes sense.”

Most people who read this site probably already check Newsarama on a daily basis like me, but for those who do not: click the link to read about Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam.
