Oh, Jason! Your death was quite profitable for DC

$2 the first minute, $0.45 each additional minute
Well Jason, stop whining. The call to save you has been finaly made during Infinite Crisis, but your death and this image from Emperor Joker #1 will aways make me chuckle.

In 1988 DC had the opportunity to make money with a 1-900 number. At the same time current Batman editor Dennis O’Neil noticed that many fans did not like Jason Todd as Robin and contemplated killing him off.

900 number + Indecisive Editor = Huge Profit

call now!The death of iconic comic characters at that time were less common than they are today. Coming off Crisis on Infinite Earths with the death of Barry Allen and Supergirl DC knew that issues with a death of an iconic character, like Robin, would sell well.

Thinking about how DC decided the death of Jason Todd made me think… It wasn’t the way in which they made money off people voting. Instead, I wonder that if the large amount of people who spent money calling the 900 number to kill off Jason Todd is somewhat connected to how death is handled in the DCU?

What do you think?
