Destro and Cobra Commander Go Joyriding…

… disguised as Kenny Rogers and some other dude:

Seriously, Cobra Commander has a legal and legit Drivers License…
For this he moves down slightly on the “Notorious Super Villain Trying To Take Over the World” scale.

WebComic: Ninja-Part 2

Last week the Booger was hiding in a dark room and proclaimed himself a “ninja.” This week BarryFly proves that the Booger is not a ninja no matter what he thinks.

This strip is based on my second favorite joke. Well it may not be technically a joke, but I still love it.

Every year during the spring my middle school students get a little more talkative so I have to pull out the “Make a ninja sound!”
The first time I ask the class this question they all yell out some kind of “HiYah!” and like BarryFly, I tell them that they fail as ninjas. They seem to find it humorous and I continue to use the “Make a ninja sound!” to get the class quiet and move on with the lesson for the rest of the year.

It may be corny but it keeps me from having to tell them to “Get quiet for the lesson” every day.

Check out the comic strip here: http://www.spacebooger.com/index.php?comicID=107

LWIC: Eww!

Last Week In Comics:
A fresh take on 5 day-old comics.

Detective Comics #854

Bruce Wayne is dead, or missing, and Dick Grayson has taken over the mantle of the bat and Kate Kain (Batwoman) has taken over the mantle of Detective Comics. That’s quite an accomplishment since the “DC” in DC Comics stands for it’s flagship “Detective Comics.” Many of you, and I’m referring to the non recent comic readers, may have heard of Batgirl but not of Batwoman. Well, you may have heard of her since she gathered a large amount of media attention when she was recreated in 2006 as a lesbian. Anyway, the media attention was about the most action Batwoman had seen since her creation, yes the pun was intended. The last time we saw her, a cult who worshiped crime tried to sacrifice her by stabbing her through her heart.

LWIC (Last Week In Comics) Batwoman returned healthy and ready to hunt down the cult that tried to kill her. It may seem like a simple plot, but Kate has more to her character other than being Batwoman and a lesbian. Note – I keep bringing up the point that she is a lesbian not because I think it’s important, but the just the opposite, to point out that it doesn’t matter. Kate Kain, like Bruce Wayne, the child of wealthy parents who fights crime. Also like Wayne, she has a hard time staying in a relationship which was well written in this issue, and focused on her mission. She is so focused on her mission she is more like Bruce’s Batman that I think Dick will be replacing Batman. I like the similarities between Batwoman and Batman (the Bruce Wayne Batman) and am looking forward to the adventures that Greg Rucka (my favorite novel author) creates for her.

The back-up feature in this comic was just as good as the main feature and deserves it’s own write-up especially since the original Question is one of my favorite characters ever.

Renee Montoya, who was first created for the animated Batman series in the 90’s, was recruited by Vic Sage to replace him when he lost the battle against cancer. Montoya, is also a lesbian who’s last relationship was with one Kate Kain, has had her own mini series where she hunted down, became the leader of, and then destroyed the cult of crime.

LWIC Montoya begins to fully embody the character of the Question by looking for conspiracy style crimes via the internet. The story is simple, she finds a plea for help, punches a dog, and gets trapped by bad guys leaving us readers hanging until the next issue. Chris Sims wrote “This one, though, reads like a straight-up story more in the vein of Denny O’Neil’s legendary Question series,” which I feel is a compliment since the O’Neil Cowan run is my favorite in the history of comics. I love the character behind the super-heroes, so if the Question is acting like the Question I’m going to love it… and it doesn’t hurt that I like the character of Renee Montoya either.

Superman #689

If you haven’t been reading the Superman related books or you didn’t read this post last week, Superman has left Earth and gone back home to New Krypton. New Krypton is located in the same orbit around the Sun as Earth, just on the opposite end. The Earthlings and the Kryptonian’s don’t trust each other since renegade Kryptoinians attacked and the US Military killed Supergirl’s dad. While Superman is off Earth he has left his childhood friend from the future Mon-El in charge of protecting Metropolis. Mon-El and Kal-El first met when Kal was a young Clark Kent. After spending some time on Earth Mon-El started to get sick and we find out that his alien race’s only weakness is to lead, and he must of ate some paint chips or something. Mon-El thought he was better but in the last issue discovered that he is not.

LWIC Mon-El travels the world seeing all that Earth has to offer before he is offed by the lead poisoning. Along his way he fights with many obscure DCU heroes around the world including a private detective that is working for a “billionaire albino midget.” That alone makes this comic great, so it’s a good thing that Geoff Johns has a couple interesting things set-up in this issue or the “billionaire albino midget” might have been the only highlight.

THE BEST COMIC OF LAST WEEK
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #598

Ok if that cover didn’t creep you out enough to send you puking, here is what has been happening in Peter Parker’s world:

So Norman Osborn has pretty much taken over the US, well the military and Avengers at least, since the alien invasion of the Skrulls – you will just have to take my word for it since I didn’t read that stuff either, I’m trusting the summary blurb in the front of the comic. Anyway, Norman’s son Harry, you know the reformed second Green Goblin, has been blackmailed by his father to become the posterboy of America since Captain America is dead. Harry Osborn is also Peter Parker’s best friend, so as you can imagine Peter is pissed when he finds out that Norman is blackmailing his own son and tries to rescue Harry. Spidey ends up getting shot in the head by Norman at the end of last issue while atempting to rescue his best friend, but…

…we found out LWIC that Peter survived that head shot with the help of a special mask created especially for these two issues by  Reed Richards.

With that kind of protection, wouldn’t it make sense that all super-heroes’ costumes were made of that material?
Anyways, back to LWIC. While Spidey’s mask is being carved away slowly, Harry tries to pull ahead of his father and rescue his pregnant fiancée (shown on the creepy ass cover above) who he thought was being held hostage by his father. Well, the pregnant young woman is following in the family business by being a “goblin” type villain known as Menace and she seems to like the villain lifestyle a little too much to give it up. Instead of being rescued, she tells Harry that she doesn’t need rescued and drops the “Your not the baby’s daddy” bomb on him. Realizing that Spidey, who by the way is getting tortured by Daddy Osborn, is his only friend he dons the armor created to fight alongside his father to fight his father.

If you are still here reading this and didn’t read the comic, you are probably real confused. This confusion is why this comic was THE BEST COMIC LAST WEEK; it’s too awesome for an amature like me to write about, meaning that you should go out and read it yourself… if you can get past that cover image.

WebComic: Ninja Part 1

I have two favorite jokes and my ultimate favorite joke about Seagulls and Bagels I already used in a comic strip (here) and on Tuesday it won me a contest (here.)

With one joke earning me a prize, I figured I would try to make a strip about my second favorite joke, but I’m not going to make it until next week. This week’s comic is just the set-up.

So, go and check out this week’s comic strip – the set-up for the real joke next week: http://www.spacebooger.com/index.php?comicID=106

LWIC: That’s The Way It Will Be

A friend of mine and new reader of this site (why has yet to leave any comments) suggested that I should recap what is happening in each comic prior to just referring to the Last Week In Comics. The more I thought about his suggestion, the more it made sense so I now present to you the new and improved:

Last Week In Comics:
A fresh take on 5 day-old comics.

Final Crisis Aftermath: Dance #2

During “Final Crisis” Grant Morrison recreated or re envisioned many of Jack Kirby’s “Fourth World” characters into different more modern versions. “Final Crisis Aftermath: Dance” revolves around the Super Young Team who is a modern incarnation of the Forever People. These fun loving, media craving, pop culture focused teenage heroes helped save the Multiverse in Final Crisis and are now ready to take the super-hero gig seriously.

LWIC (Last Week In Comics) the Super Young Team continued to break the mold they created before Final Crisis. Before the Crisis they craved attention that they now don’t really want. This issue was a little slower than the last one, but the pieces of the puzzle are starting to come together as to why the Japanese government is forcing their “multiverse saving” super-heroes to live the MTV lifestyle.

I look forward to seeing these young media crazy, selfish, pop culture stereotype heroes continue to grow into the heroes they now want to be if only their own government would let them.

Supergirl #42

Recently Braniac attacked Earth in hopes of finally capturing Superman and putting him in the bottled city of Kandor with the remaining survivors of Krypton. See that was Braniac’s thing – he destroyed planets after shrinking down the capital city and placeing it in a bottle for his personal collection. Well as we all know the bad guy never wins and Superman ultimately beats Braniac and frees millions of Kryptonians. Anyway to make a long story short(er) the US military led by Lois Lane’s father wasn’t too happy with that many super powered being flying around Earth so they sent the Kryptonians packing.

LWIC Kara (Supergirl) confronted and accidentally killed the rouge Kryptonian working for the US Military only to find out that she was not a rouge Kryptonian, but a human in a special “super suit.” Not only was her enemy not a traitorous Kryptonian, but she was the daughter of General Sam Lane and the sister of Superman’s wife Lois. In this issue Kara confronts Lois telling her the truth about the death of her sister.  The interaction that Sterling Gates writes is emotional and Jamal Igle’s art makes the scene even more emotional. Lois is not the only one who takes the death of Lucy Lane with pent up emotion… her father who was out to kill all Kryptonians as it was now vows to double or triple his effort after the death of his daughter.

and

THE BEST COMIC OF LAST WEEK
BATMAN: STREETS OF GOTHAM #1

Avid readers of the Batman family of books know that Bruce Wayne is dead. Well maybe not dead dead, but lost in time and no longer around in any comic books. While Bruce is lost in the time stream and considered “dead,” Batman is alive and kicking ass. Dick Grayson, former boy wonder and solo hero known as Nightwing, has taken over the mantle of the Bat . Robin is not who he used to be either he now is Bruce’s genetically altered son Damien and former Robin Tim Drake is traveling the world as “Red Robin.” Ok now everyone should be up to speed with the Batfamily, on to last week’s installment of Gotham’s favorite soap-opera.

LWIC the new Batman and Robin make their second appearance showing the difference between them and the old dynamic duo. Paul Dini, the writer for most of “Batman the Animated Series” episodes, focuses not on the characteristics of Batman and Robin, but how they interact with the  people, the criminals, and the city of Gotham itself. Dini writes each character with their own distinct personality but does not make that the focus of the story, instead the story not the character is the big picture. For example Damian is shown as a violent little Robin who craves wanton destruction, but the reasons are not explored in this comic and are left for the other writers of the Batman books to explore.

The simple fact that this is a “crime/detective” story similar to the ’90s Batman cartoons and not a deep character study is why this comic is easily the BEST COMIC OF LAST WEEK.
