Last week a blogger figured out that the day from Ice Cube’s hit 1993 song “It was a Good Day” was January 20th 1992. Using lyrics in the song as clues it was determined that the only day that was both smog free and a day in which the Lakers beat the Seattle SuperSonics, both of which were lyrics from the song, was January 20 1992. Check out the full details of how this date was determined at NYMag.com.
After doing a little research myself, I realized just six days after Ice Cube’s good day the residual threat of a Russian nuclear attack ended. On January 26th 1992 both the US and Russia announced that they would remove the permanent target for nuclear weapons on each other.
I’m not sure if the relief that the US wasn’t targeted by Russia’s nuclear weapons anymore played as large of a role as “no barking from the dogs, no smog, a breakfast with no hog, not a jacker in sight, no static from the cowards, the police rolled right past, the Lakers beat the Supersonics, and nobody got killed in South Central L.A.” in Ice Cube’s recollection of that “good day” in January 1992. As a child that grew up during the Cold War, I easily can state that it’s end will always be considered a “good day” to me.
