Yesterday my wife and I arrived at the hospital around 3:20pm and at 4:31pm my daughter Laura was born. Most people I tell that to are impressed with her being born within an hour of checking into the hospital, but that’s not the best part.
The main road that connects my section of town to the road the hospital is on is being worked on causing it to be reduced from two to one lane from 6am to 6pm. With one lane there are two workers, the same two every day, who hold signs stopping the north bound traffic so the south bound can move and vice verse. We have got stuck waiting our turn to get through the construction zone for over 20 minutes before, and on the way to the hospital the line was longer than I have ever seen it before.
Worried that we wouldn’t make it to the hospital in time, I popped my head out the window and yelled “My wife is in labor!” the dude holding the sign gave me a look that could be interpreted as either confused or thinking that I was pulling his chain to get through faster. Luckily he waved us through and as we are driving past all the workers we can hear over their radios the traffic man saying that “this guys wife is in labor” and every worker stopped to look at us to see if my wife was really in labor.
If it wasn’t for the nice man controlling the construction traffic we may never have made it to the hospital in time for my daughter’s birth, so today on my way home from the hospital I stopped and thanked him. He shook my hand and said “no problem” with another confused look on his face. It wasn’t until I walked away that I think it all sunk in for him and he yelled out “So what did you have a boy or girl?” I answered “Baby girl!” and he pumped his fist in a celebratory manner and then grabbed his walkie-talkie.
As much as I am grateful for the traffic man’s kindness, the Booger isn’t too happy about my new baby daughter. Last week the Booger was complaining about his comic strip being moved from the front page of the site to the second to last link in the top menu. This week he is annoyed again that he is once again overshadowed by something else – a cute newborn baby girl.
