Four years worth of comics… Wow!

On January 17, 2007 the world (wide web) got to see the Booger and his supporting cast for the first time. The concept for SpaceBooger the webcomic is simple: A boy, a Booger, a Butterfly on steroids, and the Missing Piece of Pac-Man are all trapped on a broken down spaceship floating in space with nothing but the internet and pop culture to entertain them.
I may only make one comic strip a week, but having done so for four years is something that I never thought of. Don’t get me wrong, I never imagined that I would quit doing the strip before the four year mark, but neither did I see myself doing them past four years. I really didn’t know what to expect back in 2007. I just wanted to make a comic strip. So I did and now, four years later, I’m still making them. Four years ago in 2007 when the comic strip started, I wasn’t married, had no kids, had lots of free time, and I was struggling to find/create content and update it regularly. Now in 2011 I am married, have two kids and another on the way, have no free time, and I now create content at least five days a week. It’s safe to say that a lot has changed with both the site and comic strip. As I look back at the comic strip, I laugh. I am not laughing because the strip is funny, I laugh instead because of how different it is today from three years ago.
For each of the previous “anniversary” strips, I parodied pop culture. The first anniversary I got a little dig in at George Lucas by “remastering” the the first ever comic strip into a four part Green Lantern based origin story. For the second anniversary I parodied Superman’s origin as the Booger’s origin. Last year I decided to streamline the comic and phase out the “kid” who used to be a main character in the strip by incorporating the “interviewing for our own jobs” shtick from Office Space. This year I decided to create something that is long overdue – a Who’s Who Of The SpaceBooger Universe.

As the site has grown, so has the number of readers, and the first thing the readers do is ask about the characters in the comic strip. Since I created them and create their look and personalities every week I tend to assume that everyone knows them as well as I do. Well we all know what they say assuming does, so I finally bit the bullet and created a summary comic explaining each main character’s personality and origin. And like every other “anniversary” comic I included a heavy dose of parody by using the title and format used by DC Comics as the encyclopedia of their characters.

Also, keep your eyes open for the new “Comic Strip” page to replace the current link at the top of the page. The new page will feature a rundown of the main characters along with some of the best strips that feature the characters. To view all of the comics use the archive menu under the current comic strip above. I hope to have this page up and running within the next couple of weeks.
