WebComic: The Scream

Ahh, the most common misconception in science fiction - noise in space.

Many movies get this concept wrong, but here at SpaceBooger we only promote good science! (for this week at least…)

Be sure to visit list of Bad Movie Physics and Phil Plait’s Bad Astronomy website to read more about bad use of science in popular fiction.

Here it is the promised double sized comic strip! http://www.spacebooger.com/index.php?comicID=51

Last Week In Comics: LOSH Times Two

SpaceBooger’s weekly review of last weeks comics is back giving a fresh take on 5-day-old comics:

Blue Beetle 26
Blue Beetle #26 breaks the language barrier and still gives us the best comic of last week.

Action COmics 864
Batman and Disneyland in the same pop-up books is something beyond even my imagination.

Action Comics #864: I used to hate any story that involved time travel and didn’t include Marty McFly. I think the reason that time travel used to annoy me when I was younger revolved around my grasp on comic book continuity and not having the ability to research stories via Wikipedia. Now that I have collected a large run of Supberboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes from ebay, I am loving almost everything LOSH.

In Action Comics #864 once again the LOSH that I know and love returns from the last arc to bring a villain that has been featured here as the recipient of a Superboy punch on Friday Night Fights. I look forward to how all of this ties into the upcoming LOSH Final Crisis miniseries. Speaking of Final Crisis…

DCU 0

DC Universe 0: The reviews on this comic have been mixed. There is not much that I can say about it that has not already been said… I will add that I enjoyed the one page teaser/titles for all the Final Crisis stories more than the actual comic.

GL 30

Green Lantern #30: I felt like I was reading “Ultimate Green Lantern #2″ instead of Green Lantern #30. I have always been a fan of Hal Jordan as the Green Lantern, and because of SuperFriends he will always be the one true Green Lantern. Since his “Rebirth” I have enjoyed the return of Hal Jordan. I have even enjoyed the idea that there will soon be many other different colored rings… but messing with his origin without a Crisis, come on!

LOSH 41
Braniac has a thirst for knowledge…
… or maybe just dissection.

Legion of Super-Heroes #41: This may not be the Legion I grew up reading or am the most familiar with, but it does share the same writer - Jim Shooter. I decided to start reading LOSH when Shooter came back on board as the writer and I have to say I could not be happier. I have noticed since Shooter started writing this series that there has been a weird emphasis on cursing and teenage sex, weird/kinky sex (I recently purchased the Harbinger hardback and noticed a similar concept).

I am enjoying the woes of Super-Heroes working with politicians, the mystery of the possible Flight Ring espionage, and the continued Alien Destroyer saga.

TT 58
For some reason when I see this image I think of Aquafresh toothpaste.

Teen Titans #58 showcased Miss Martian and her future self… sister… or other personality. This issue takes place three issues ago which is confusing to begin with, but seeing how the future version of Miss Martian is trapped within the younger brain is straight up confusing. I found myself wondering if these two Martians were sisters after reading the flashbacks. After reading the comic again today to write this review and researching on Wikipedia that the future consciousness is trapped in the present mind of Miss Martian helped make the issue easier to read… but I don’t know if this title will be purchased until the next story arc.

THE BEST COMIC OF LAST WEEK:
Blue Beetle #26

I spent more time with this book than any other this past week. I read it once, well more like tried to read it once using body language and context clues, on Wednesday.

I then read the script once chuckling at the dialog and trying to remember the images.
The third time I read the issue it became clear that this was the best comic of last week when reading the Spanish dialog and remembering loosely what the translation was. The dynamic of all the characters in this book made it an amazing comic, whether it is written in your native language or not.

This issue takes place at a family reunion alomst all readers of any age who has ever been to a large family gathering will get some chukles out of the situations, especialy the speach that is given my the most respected member of the family: Grandma.

This is a must read for everyone, no matter what the age or what language you speak, this is a pure “hero” comic… the type of hero we all dreamed of being when we were younger, someone our grandmother would be proud of.

Soundwave at Prom

Yesterday I noticed a lot of fancy cars and tuxedos while driving through my parent’s allotment yesterday and was able to deduce that it was Prom night at the local high school.

This scene reminded me of the episode of Transformers where Soundwave attends a high school dance.

WebComic: A Death in the Community!

First off I know that I promised a double sized 50th strip this week, but how could SpaceBooger not respond to a death in our own WebComic Community?

If you have not read Monday’s installment of “The Rack” you many want to check it out first because this week’s SpaceBooger comic contains spoilers.

In the comic book community the death of a comic character has become somewhat of a joke. Death, which should be permanent, seems to have the same revolving door in comic books that a soap operas have. Monday’s installment of “The Rack” featured the death of a character. The character may not have been very prominent or memorable, as joked about in my SpaceBooger strip, but the death seemed real and emotional. Unlike the deaths in the major publisher’s comics, this death did not seem like a gimmick or unnecessary sacrifice. The death of Alfredo, a seemingly unknown character seems real and emotional because of how it effects the other characters, not the story line.

There is not too much to say about this week’s comic since readers of “The Rack” will get it and those who don’t read it better jump on the bandwagon. The Rack is a comic strip about a comic shop written by Kevin Church (beaucoupkevin.com) who writes web and print comics and even has a comic blog in which partially served as a template for SpaceBooger.com. Benjamin Birdie (benjaminbirdie.com) is the other half of the dynamic duo and provides the art chores on the comic. I have always believed that fame can be granted to some only by death - Alfredo’s chance for fame is near. I look forward to some flashback strips featuring Alfredo in the near future over at www.therackcomic.com

Last Week In Comics: The Science of Super-Heroics

SpaceBooger’s weekly review of last weeks comics is back giving a fresh take on 5-day-old comics:

superman batman 47
Superman and Batman running moonshine during prohibition?
No, they were just trespassing in a government warehouse of kryptonite weapons.

Batman #675 was a trip back to 1994 with exagerated anatomy and millions of little lines on every male face. Chris at the ISB said it best: “it starts to read like a very well-colored issue of X-Force.” I myself did not mind the art that much, but after hearing rumors that the Batman R.I.P. storyline would involve Bruce Wayne choosing love over playing Dark Knight, the revelation of Batman’s secret identity and seriousness of the relationship between him and Jezebel Jet seems quite forced.
On a side note: I like the interaction and teamwork shown by Morrison during the Nightwing and Robin scenes… It makes me wonder about who will become the next Batman since these two former Robins work together so well as a team reminiscent of the original Dynamic Duo.

sisters
Ahh a main and stable cast! Lets sing: “We are family! I’ve got all my sisters with me…”
Ok, I’ll stop and move on to the review now.

Birds of Prey #117 is starting to have that family feeling again that made it so enjoyable in the past. Since the inception of this book it has always been part of the “Bat-Family” of books, focusing on many of the females in the Gotham. Since Black Canary left to wed Green Arrow the family dynamic has not been that strong with a rotating cast of female characters. Now with the full inclusion of Misfit, who I have to admit has grown on me, the family dynamic made this issue one of the best of last week.

nice glasses
Oh, and how could I not mention the awesomely stereotypical nerd from Birds of Prey 117 who wears glasses so thick they magnify his eyeballs!

Poor Jimmy
Jimmy your relationship is not the only thing heading to the dumpster!

Countdown to Final Crisis #1 is finally over. One year later and about $160 spent the build up is over… or is it. 52 was awesome and set a high standard for Countdown. I think DC planned for Countdown to be a let down so that the upcoming Final Crisis will look awesome compared to it. Yeah… I have nothing else to say about it…

47
Superman still refuses to remove his Metal Gear Solid Ninja costume.

Superman Batman #47 continues the Kryptonite Crusade to rid the planet of Superman’s only weakness. This issue is a little “Men in Black” and a little “The Untouchables” with an underground government facility built to house weapons to take down Superman facading as a small town diner. This arc started out strong, and I don’t know if its just me or the story, but it seems to be dragging on too long. I am afraid that this is one of those stories that will be better read in on sitting as a trade, which if that is the case then release it as a trade from the start…
Ok, back to issue 47…
In this issue we see that the government is afraid that one day Superman will go nuts and take over the world, so they created a task force to take him out just in case that ever happens. This story works and was awesome when I saw it the first time on the animate Justice League Unlimited. Anyway even if it seems to be dragging, I am still enjoying it and wonder exactly what the origin of the Kryptonite Doomsday is.

and…

THE BEST COMIC OF LAST WEEK:
Justice League of America #20

I can do that too... kinda

Justice League of America #20 featured a solo Wally West story with a supporting cast of Wonder Woman and Black Lightning. I used to love the thought balloons in early comics when they shed insight on the character and not the storyline. Thought balloons were great to show what a character was really like, but many times were misused as a story telling devise. This issue of Justice League of America Dwayne McDuffie does a great job of using the narration boxes to build the character of the Flash. We get to see the reasons behind his actions, not to tell us what his actions are or will be. My favorite part of the whole issue was when Wally was reminiscing of the humorous story behind the science of putting out a fire. Its little touches like that along with the prescience of Superman and Batman thorough the dialog that makes Justice League of America #20 and it’s phenomenal character portrayals the BEST COMIC OF LAST WEEK.

Did You Forget That World War III Happened?

WW III

Did you forget at this time last year World War III began?

On April 18, 2007 the world’s super-heroes went to war with Black Adam.

In issue #50 of DC Comic’s weekly series 52 Black Adam ran, flew, rampaged the planet with death and destruction in retaliation of the death/murder of his wife and family.

Many of the changes to DC Comic’s One Year Later storyline was described within this mini series. During World War III Dona Troy taking the mantle of Wonder Woman, Aquaman makes a deal with the Gods to raise the sunken town of Sub Diego leaving him the disfigured Dweller of the Deep, and the Martian Manhunter changes his wardrobe and attitude after peering into Black Adam’s mind.

The newly introduced Chineese super-heroes, the Great Ten, hold off Black Adam long enough for the JSA and J’onn to stop him. The war ended with Captain Marvel changing the magic word that gives Teth-Adam the power of Black Adam.

Did you forget that the World War III happened?
